In this first video of the 2-part FAQ, "The History of the Society of St. Pius X" we look back at the beginning of the priestly society.
The SSPX's history—like that of the Catholic Church as a whole—is a beautiful mystery. Both continue to flourish despite many setbacks and uncertainties. From its humble origins, the SSPX has grown exponentially and today proclaims the Catholic Faith throughout the world.
This video speaks about the foundation of the Society of St. Pius X in 1970 by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, a retired prelate. You will also learn how the New Mass quickly became one of the central issues for the new priestly society's fidelity to Catholic Tradition. It was a time when the Church was quickly becoming Modernist with the introduction of such post-conciliar novelties of ecumenism.
This brought Archbishop Lefebvre and his growing seminary in Econe, Switzerland under the scrutiny of the Church's authorities, which resulted in an apostolic visit in 1974. The two apostolic visitors gave a positive report to the pope, but their scandalous comments about matters of the Faith led Archbishop Lefebvre to issue his famous Declaration.
